What is a good guard dog but is friendly?

im thinking about getting a new dog because our recent one passed away. I'm thinking about getting a german Shepperd but i read they aren't to well with people. I then looked at golden retrievers which the wiki said there were very friendly, making them bad choices for guard dogs. can someone help me find a dog that is friend but will be a good guard dog? thank you
