Why does Color Guard use metal sabres?

They have to tape the blades anyway, which makes them look like plastic instead of metal. This particular school leaves the tape on for performances as well as plastic. Wouldn't it make more sense to use fake sabres with safer blades? After all, they use "rifles" that don't even try to look real.
