What do fleas look like?

I put Hartz Ultra Guard flea and tick drops on my dog 7/1/11. It looks like little long black narrow bugs and she is scratching. I don't know where these bugs are coming from. They look like what we used to call fleas. Can anybody help me with this. I don't want to wait until the vet opens on tuesday. Thanks in advance for any help.
